Vascular Disease

Learn about common types of vascular disease.

WHAT IS VASCULAR DISEASE?

Vascular disease refers to any of a number of dangerous conditions involving the arteries and veins in your body. Blood vessels circulate blood throughout the body, and when blockages due to plaque buildup and cholesterol occur it can cause pain, disability, or even death.

COMMON TYPES OF VASCULAR DISEASE

While many are familiar with the condition known as heart disease, most do not know that the coronary arteries are not the only blood vessels susceptible to blockage.  In fact, all arteries are critical in the delivery of oxygen-rich blood to the many parts of our bodies and blockages can manifest in any of them.

Vascular diseases can develop throughout the body.  Some of the more common vascular diseases include:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
  • Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)
  • Carotid Artery Disease (CAD)
  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)
  • Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI)
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (blood clots)
  • Stroke
  • Varicose Veins

WHO IS AT RISK FOR VASCULAR DISEASE?

In short, we are all at risk for vascular disease. Obesity and Type II diabetes are on the rise in America. The U.S. population continues to age and vascular diseases are reaching epidemic levels. Nearly 9 million people in this country are suffering from peripheral artery disease (PAD), and that’s just one type of vascular disease! Men and women are at equal risk for developing vascular diseases, which can occur at any age and without warning.
